Richard Wester

Richard Wester, a cherished son, trailblazer, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully in West Palm Beach, Florida on December 10, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on September 24, 1945, to the loving parents Walter and Hazel Wester, Richard’s journey was marked by profound achievements and the warmth of deep connections with those around him. Fire Chief Richard C. Wester "The Strict Disciplinarian" Tenure: 1969 - Retired: 1995 Richard C. Wester is a long-time resident of Riviera Beach. While attending Florida State Fire College, in Ocala, Florida, he majored in Fire Science. In 1969 Firefighter Wester became the first Black, full-time firefighter in Palm Beach County. Several years later, in 1981, he became the recruiting and training officer for the Riviera Beach Fire Department. Accepting that task included soliciting qualified, Black, applicants for our fire department. He trained every recruit to ensure that all applicants were given the same opportunity. During the early 1990s, he made history when he was appointed the first Black Fire Chief of a major municipality in Palm Beach County and the State of Florida. Chief Wester's management style allowed supervisors to be involved with major decision-making, and promotions, which allowed his management team to feel that their input was considered and that their opinions were valued. After nearly 27 (twenty-seven) years of dedicated serv Chief Wester retired in 1995.  Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard's warm spirit and kind nature touched the lives of countless individuals. Whether through small acts of kindness or by lending an empathetic ear to those in need, Richard embodied the essence of a true friend. His laughter and wisdom will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Richard leaves behind a host of family and friends who will cherish his precious memories and carry forward the lessons of love, perseverance, and community that he instilled in them. As we remember Richard Wester, let us celebrate a life well-lived—a life that broke barriers, fostered connections, and left an indelible mark on the world around him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his spirit will forever illuminate the path for others.
